Overview
The Akamai Systems Communications (Syscomm) Metadata group is searching for a talented Senior Service Performance Engineer to join its team. A successful performance engineer will define and drive projects to measure and improve performance of systems over time. This will involve developing tools and processes to collect and analyze performance-related data and proposing and implementing ways to make improvements. The role is also responsible for qualifying all aspects of existing/ new features including compatibility, scalability, high availability and stress testing.
About the Team
The Metadata Team is a part of the Akamai’s Systems Communications group (Syscomm), a cross-functional engineering team that develops the distributed systems and services that underpin Akamai's global network. The Metadata Team’s systems support fast and reliable configuration of the company’s global network, as well as control services for global content management. As part of this elite team, you will have opportunity to leverage your distributed systems, network diagnostics and analytical skills to characterize performance, reliability and capacity of the system.
As a Senior Service Performance Engineer you will:
* Work closely with Development teams in designing and implementing performance enhancements and new features
* Develop monitoring tools and automate processes to help scale our systems better
* Define metrics for tracking system performance and drive these systems to meet those metrics
* Respond to incidents but, more importantly, help prevent incidents through predictive modeling and active analysis
* Troubleshoot complex network issues, scalability issues, and availability issues
* System performance testing of highly distributed messaging systems (one of the largest of its type in the world)
Required Education and Experience:
* 5+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelors degree or
* 3+ years of relevant experience and a Masters degree or
* Relevant experience and a PhD
Required Skills:
* 5+ years of experience developing or doing performance analysis of network software applications.
* 5+ years of experience with Linux/ Unix administration
* 5+ years of experience developing automation in one or more of the following languages: Python, Shell and/ or TCL
Desired Skills:
* Demonstrated ability to operate in a dynamic and ad hoc environment
* Strong attention to detail and excellent problem solving and analytical skills
* Experience with testing very large scale, distributed systems
* Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) and test automation systems such as Jenkins
* Experience working with TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP protocols
* Experience monitoring and optimizing complex distributed systems
* Experience working in an agile (scrum) development environment
* Familiarity with SQL, Perl, Python, Shell and/or TCL
